Belgian Research Identifies Link Between Excess Body Weight and Mortality from Cardiovascular and Neurological Diseases

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Public health institute Sciensano has released Belgium’s first detailed assessment of deaths associated with obesity, indicating that 9,509 fatalities in 2022—or 8.2 percent of all deaths—were linked to an excessively high body mass index. This translates to more than one death per hour, with weight-related health issues responsible for over 150,000 years of life lost across the country, setting a new quantitative reference point for health policy planning in Belgium.

Belgian study links obesity to heart disease and dementia deaths
Scientific researchers study cardiovascular disease data to improve public health prevention.

The detailed epidemiological study explored underlying causes of death to understand how increased body weight influences chronic health conditions. Results showed cardiovascular problems as the leading cause of death, with coronary heart diseases responsible for 2,009 fatalities. Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer disease and other forms of dementia, were the second most common, accounting for 1,652 deaths. Furthermore, cerebrovascular diseases caused 1,171 deaths, with significant contributions from chronic kidney disease and various digestive cancers also noted.

Analysis based on demographic data demonstrates that the risk of mortality related to excess weight grows markedly with age. The highest concentration of weight-related health issues was observed among individuals aged 65 and above. Gender-specific data reveals that mortality rates among men surpassed those of women in most age groups, yet women aged 85 and older recorded higher total death figures. Experts attribute this trend to the longer average lifespan observed in women.

Regional Disparities Indicate Elevated Mortality Risks for Older Adults

Across Belgium, geographical analysis uncovered notable disparities in mortality rates associated with excess weight. The southern region of Wallonia showed the highest mortality rate at 95.21 deaths per 100,000 residents. The Brussels-Capital Region followed with an age-standardized rate of 85 deaths per 100,000 residents. In contrast, Flanders reported the lowest rate, with 73.60 deaths per 100,000 residents. Analysts suggest these regional differences mirror socioeconomic factors, dietary habits, and healthcare access variations across Belgium.

This report’s release coincides with ongoing policy reviews led by the Federal Public Service Health, which manages national health strategies. Officials are analyzing the findings to understand the long-term economic impact of chronic non-communicable diseases on the healthcare system. The methodology used involved calculating the population attributable fraction for each disease, providing baseline data to inform future preventive health measures.

Cerebrovascular Issues Are the Third Leading Cause of Death

At the European level, agencies such as the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control monitor similar metabolic risk factors to coordinate regional policies. The Belgian report aligns with broader European Union health objectives aimed at reducing early deaths from non-communicable diseases. The World Health Organization continues to advocate for integrated strategies involving public education, nutritional labeling, and early clinical intervention to address metabolic risks.

These findings provide a solid evidence base for health authorities striving to decrease high body mass index prevalence across Western Europe. By quantifying both mortality figures and years of life lost, public health policymakers can better allocate resources toward screening, intervention programs, and lifestyle improvements. As regional entities analyze this data, national health systems are expected to emphasize early preventative care to lower the overall burden of chronic illnesses nationwide.
