Record-Breaking Wind Capacity Growth Predicted for Europe as 8.8 GW Installed in H1 2026

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Europe is on course for a historic year in wind energy expansion after adding 8.8 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity during the first half of 2026, reflecting a 30% rise compared to the same period in the previous year. As per the latest industry data published by Wind Europe, the turbines commissioned recently produce enough electricity to supply roughly 7 million European households and displace fossil fuel imports equivalent to 25 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers annually. The continent’s wind power sector is experiencing an accelerated growth phase over the summer months, fueling its energy transition goals.

Europe on track for record year in wind power with 8.8 GW added
Industrial wind farm installations operate across green agricultural fields in rural Europe.

Germany led regional expansion in the first half of 2026, contributing 3.4 GW—approximately 40% of all new wind capacity added across Europe. Over 500 individual turbines were installed within Germany, including 423 onshore units and 84 offshore turbines. Several other nations, such as Denmark, Poland, Portugal, and France, also achieved notable capacity increases. Ukraine, despite ongoing conflict, added more than 400 MW of operational wind capacity, and Belgium brought an additional 60 MW online to its national grid.

Forecasts published in WindEurope’s Autumn Report suggest that total wind capacity added across Europe will reach 24 GW by 2026’s end, setting a new record for annual installations. This growth phase is viewed as a stepping stone toward the broader industrial target of 30 GW of yearly additions in the 2030s. During the first half of 2026, investment in new wind farms hit 9 billion euros, with national governments allocating over 17 GW through competitive auctions, and an additional 26 GW expected to be tendered before year’s end.

Europe Approaching a New Record in Wind Power Installations

However, despite these impressive figures, representatives from the industry warned that ongoing structural bottlenecks still threaten long-term growth prospects. Although Germany advanced its deployment by permitting over 9 GW of onshore wind capacity during the first half of 2026, several key markets—including Spain, France, the UK, Italy, and Ireland—saw permitting volumes decline. While wind power installations continue to grow, bureaucratic delays in grid connection approvals remain a major obstacle, risking future project delays and affecting overall progress.

In a public statement accompanying the report release, WindEurope CEO Tinne Van der Straeten emphasized that 2026 might set a new record for wind installations but cautioned that this momentum cannot be assumed to persist. She underlined that the decisions made by governments regarding permitting procedures, auction mechanisms, grid infrastructure expansion, and industrial electrification over the coming months will be decisive in maintaining the sector’s current growth trajectory.

Trade Association Highlights Five Key Policy Areas for EU Leadership

To sustain current growth levels, the industry group outlined five essential policy priorities for EU authorities and member states. These include implementing streamlined permitting procedures, expanding regional transmission capacity, directing Emissions Trading System revenues toward industrial electrification, and establishing a binding renewable energy target for 2040. According to current projections, European wind capacity could reach 436 GW by 2030, supplying 27% of the continent’s total electricity needs.

Upcoming ministerial meetings scheduled before the winter season will see federal ministries and European regulators review these policy recommendations. Official trade portals will continue to provide comprehensive data on national turbine installations and auction outcomes, ensuring ongoing monitoring of compliance with EU decarbonization goals.
